If you would have asked me two years ago what I thought about working in an IT company, the answer I’d given you would be really different than the one I will give you now.
Let’s start from the beginning. Some time ago I saw an advertisement about a small startup company looking for developers. I was not experienced in programming but I decided to give it a try anyway. So I sent a CV, they called me for an interview and finally BOOM, I got the job. That’s when I started thinking of how my daily routine would be from now on.
Every morning I will have a cup of coffee and drive myself to the office. When I get there I will sit in my office and sink in endless lines of code. From time to time my boss will yell at someone about not being productive or making some mistake on a task. It can’t be helped. Eight or even more hours sitting on a chair, trying to solve every problem and not talking to anyone because they have serious work to do. Maybe we will have boring meetings every once in a while. I should be ready for everything. After all this was my chance to become a great developer, no matter what.
The days passed and I kept thinking about such things until my first day in the office. That’s when I started changing my mind about my job. The first day, I got the contact and started reading it. I should work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day blah, blah, blah… But wait. What did I just read? I can have a one hour break every day to do whatever I want. Is this even legal? I can go for lunch, hang around with the others or play some mini basket or darts in the office. Ok to be honest I wasn’t expecting exactly this.
I met the team and they were all young people and most of them were really funny (maybe even crazy). The boss was not really boss but our partner and he was not yelling at us. Instead he believed that in order to be more productive we should be relaxed and have fun in programming. So the team seems to be ok. Let’s see about the equipment. That’s when it became real good. This is your MAC, my boss said. Really? A badass MAC? It’s the first time I have the chance use one of these things. And wait for it… I can even take it home and use it as my own. I was so excited.
That was the beginning of a really good period of my life. Since then I became better and better on my work having my partners helping me every time I needed them. We have a good team, working together and having fun at the same time. As if this wasn’t enough, the company also organises family bonding trips every year, which are actually vacations for the whole team to relax and know each other better.
So what it’s like to work in a small startup company? It’s about working hard and having fun, relying on each other and expanding slowly but steadily. I wish to every wannabe programmer to be as lucky as me and have the opportunity to work in a company like this in a time and place like this..
